Annual Report to the Cathedral Vestry

2012 has been a good year.

We have taken less in the shop [as we have noticed a marked decrease in tourists & those who visit the Cathedral. are often not aware that we exist]. In spite of this our giving has remained almost the same as we had some reserves to fall back on and we made almost R20000 more at the outside sales [Somerset Mall, Cavendish Square, and at the Cape Town Book Fair at the CTICC]. In total we took over R50000 at these sales.

We are very grateful to all who work so hard. We are well served by a very committed band of volunteers, both those who volunteer week by week in the shop and that much wider group,  who help at the annual Cavendish and Somerset Mall Sales. We are also grateful to 2 ‘swallows’, Anne and Peter who come out for our summer and help sort and shelve books, Kay Hudson who for many years has written our  ‘thank you’ letters & for Mavis Dobson who has taken over. There are many others on whom we can call occasionally, among them a work team from Chatt   [Cathedral Aids Task Team] who have volunteered to come in on an occasional Saturday morning to clean books and help shelve them, to John Spengler who has been invaluable during  his school holidays, and last but not least a huge thank you to Sophie, who meticulously covers all ‘dust jacketed’ books in clear plastic.

We were saddened by the death of Gisela Becker, who was a foundation member of the shop and came week by week until her stroke 3 years ago. We have inscribed a prayer book in her name for use in the Cathedral.

We rely on you, the congregation to donate books and other items that can be sold. Please make us known, tell your friends, neighbours and colleagues about us.

Times are tough financially, but that should be seen as an opportunity, ‘second hand’ means bargains and it is a way of recycling something one no longer has use further use for.

We support the Cathedral Music Fund, to which we give one third of the amount we disburse.

Another third is intended to support the Cathedral’s own outreach- and so we contribute to an emergency fund of money that the Dean or other clergy can give to anyone in dire circumstances. We also give money to CHATT & the Arch Soup Kitchen and small amounts to other ministries.

The final third is given to charities and organisations outside the orbit of the Cathedral. [Actual list is on the Cathedral Notice Board and in the shop]

During 2012 we disbursed R70000 to each of the three areas we support.

[i.e. R 210,000 in total.

1. Cathedral outreach ministries

2. The Cathedral Music Fund

3. Ministries and organizations not connected to the Cathedral.

This current year [2013] started very well in January, but has slowed down in Feb. It is a continuing challenge to attract customers to buy our goods. We are dependent on both, our regular customers and the tourists who visit the Cathedral from many parts of our country and the world. Please ‘like us’ on Facebook and ‘follow us’ on Twitter. Our new website is http://stgeorgesbooks.com

A big thank you to all those who support the shop in any way. Especially to the faithful band of volunteers and all those who donate goods to sell. Without this commitment we could not continue to enable the Cathedral to be generous to those who benefit from the proceeds.
